I’ve been playing with different scrub formulas for YEARS, and I finally hit upon a combination of butters, oils, and emulsifiers/thickeners that leave you feeling super soft and just a tiny bit slick upon rinse-off, but definitely NOT slippery like you’ve been doused in oil. Those oily scrubs are NOT my jam. But if you like them, I love that for you.
This formulation contains my “holy trinity” of butters: Kokum, Cupuacu, and Horsetail. I find when I add these butters to any creamy, body formulation, half of the work is already done. I may have to tweak the emulsifier, oils, or other additives or actives, but this “trinity” is rock solid. It has all of the lusciousness and structure that Kokum Butter can provide, and all of the water-binding and skin-softening that Cupuacu Butter brings to the table. The Horsetail Butter provides some lovely slip from the natural silicones Horsetail herb contains.
The amount of sugar is pretty customizable. You can add more, or less depending on what you like. But go slowly and add (or decrease) in around 5 gram increments until you hit your sweet spot.

My PERFECT Sugar Scrub
Oil Phase:
8g / 8% BTMS - 50
2g / 2% Stearic Acid
1.5g / 1.5% Kokum Butter
2g / 2% Cupuacu Butter
2g / 2% Horsetail Butter
13g / 13% Sunflower Oil
2g / 2% Rice Bran Oil
Cool Down Phase:
2g / 2% Fragrance Oil / Essential Oil
1g / 1% Optiphen
0.5g / 0.5% Vitamin E (Tocopherol)
66g / 66% Sugar
Instructions:
- Combine all of the oil phase ingredients into a heat-safe bowl.
- Microwave in 30 second bursts until everything is melted.
- Carefully stir to combine all of the hot ingredients.
- Add sugar to hot oils and stir thoroughly to combine.
- Once temperature is BELOW the recommended temperature for your preservative AND the flashpoint of your fragrance oil, add the cool down phase and stir well.
- Transfer to a sanitized plastic jar and cap it once it reaches room temperature.
