Soothing Calming Jelly Mask

My mind is bursting with formulations to try with all kinds of actives that promise to coerce your skin into being amazing, by any (safe) means necessary. But all of these actives can be a bit much sometimes, and SOMETIMES your skin just needs to be babied. I try to have at least one evening a month when I do just that. I gently wash my skin with the mildest, plainest face wash I have. I smear on a lovely, cushiony mask that promises nothing more than to moisturize and calm my skin. And then I apply a super plain moisturizer and go to bed. No acids, no brightening elixirs, no exfoliating granules…just plain, super-basic skin care. And my skin always responds positively.

I love using this mask for those days when a “skin-rest” is needed. I used some chamomile and centella hydrosols I made, but you can use any soothing/calming ones you have, OR just sub those out for more water. I added allantoin and panthenol because they’re just so good at hydrating, as well as soothing irritated skin. Colloidal oats are a must for a soothing mask, in my opinion, and who doesn’t love aloe gel?

Sometimes your skin just needs a break. You don’t always need some aggressive active, or procedure, done to your skin. Or sometimes your skin is prickling precisely BECAUSE you were a little harsh with it and now it just needs to chill out. That’s what this mask is for.

________

100g / 100%

Instructions:

  1. Combine the first 3 ingredients in a sanitized vessel.
  2. Add the allantoin and panthenol to the above ingredients and stir until the solution is mostly clear. *It’s ok to see a little “dusting” of powder on the bottom of the vessel. It will dissolve as we add more water-based ingredients and stir.
  3. Add the Liquid Germall Plus and stir to incorporate.
  4. Add the colloidal oats and stir. I squish all of the big clumps, but they should work themselves out when you mix it with the milk frother in the next step.
  5. Add the aloe gel and glycerin to the vessel and thoroughly combine with a milk frother. *If you are making a lot of this, use an immersion blender.
  6. In a separate, small vessel mix together the fragrance and the Ultra Mild surfactant. Then add the mixture to the rest of the ingredients and stir well. DO NOT use the milk frother for fear of kicking up too many bubbles.
  7. Add a skin-safe mica if you choose, and stir to combine.
  8. Sprinkle the Sepimax Zen and Hyaluronic Acid on top of the ingredients and stir well to wet the powders.
  9. Cover the vessel with cling film and set aside for a few hours to overnight.
  10. If you wait until the next day, you should be able to just stir the mixture to completely combine everything. If you are impatient (like I am), after 2-3 hours you can use an immersion blender to distribute and hydrate the Sepimax Zen and Hyaluronic Acid. Blend for 2 - 3 minutes.
  11. Transfer to a sanitized jar with a tight-fitting lid and enjoy!

To use: Spread on a freshly cleansed, dry face using a brush or clean, dry fingers. Leave on for 10-15 minutes and rinse with lukewarm water and a clean facial cloth to remove completely. Pat skin dry and follow up with a moisturizer, if needed.
